This weekend, we celebrate the incredible mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, aunts, guardians, and all those who nurture, guide, and love our students unconditionally. Thank you for the countless ways you support your children and our school community. Your strength, care, and dedication inspire us every day.
Wishing you a joyful and restful Mother’s Day—you deserve it! 💐

2.5

2.5 Weeks Left of the School Year

We are down to two and half more weeks of school. Please make sure that you’re staying on top of your students’ grades and assignments. We expect all of them to finish this 4th quarter on a strong note.

testing

Testing - May 12 - May 16

This is our last week of testing. Math and English teachers will be finishing the iReady diagnostic during class time. We will also finish state testing for any student who has been absent or hasn't finished their state testing yet.

It is very important that students are here every days & that they arrive on time!!!

Tips for Success!
  • Get a Good Night's Rest
  • Eat Breakfast - we serve free breakfast daily from 7:30am to 8:10am.
  • Avoid a stressful morning to help the student's mindset.
  • Relaxation techniques if they're feeling anxious.
  • There is no pressure. Students just need to show what they know.
  • Have confidence!

Make sure students bring their own reusable water bottle & that their Chromebooks are charged every day!

Saturday School - May 17

We have Saturday School this Saturday, May 17th.
If students need help getting any work done before the end of 4th quarter, they can come get help from 8am to 11am.
We’ll be in room 41 so please make sure they enter through the back gate of the school.

Drop, Cover, & Hold On - Safety Drill

We have a “Drop Cover and Hold On” Safety Drill on Wednesday morning. We will practice the safety protocols that we use should there ever be an earthquake. This is our last drill of the year.

Important Chromebook Updates

Chromebooks are going to be collected the week of May 19th.

Parents:
If there are any damages to the Chromebook you will
be responsible for payment.

For example, a replacement charger is $25, a screen is $75, and if the entire Chromebook will need to be replaced that can cost up to $355.
Please make sure that students are taking care of their Chromebooks.

**Dangerous TikTok trend**
There’s a dangerous TikTok trend going around where students put mechanical pencil lead into Chromebook charging ports to make them smoke. This doesn’t just damage the Chromebook—it destroys it, poses a safety risk, and is considered willful destruction of school property.
That means serious consequences and a bill of nearly $500 to replace the entire Chromebook. We're warning students not to fall for dangerous trends—be smart, be safe, and take care of your device.

Attention 6th Grade Families!

We need your support in guiding our students toward healthy conflict resolution strategies. Recently, we've seen an increase in reports of peer conflicts and online cyberbullying among our 6th-grade students.
This week, Mrs. Antuna and Ms. Coronel will be visiting classrooms to talk about appropriate ways to resolve conflicts. We kindly ask that you continue this conversation at home. Please encourage your child to report any incidents to a trusted adult rather than escalating the situation.
Your partnership is essential in helping our students feel safe and supported.

Also, a reminder that a TDAP booster shot is required before entering 7th grade. Call your child’s health clinic today if it’s missing. Your 6th grader will receive a note from the school if they do not have a TDAP booster.

Attendance Matters!

Even in the final weeks of school, attendance is critical. Families: We send home notifications weekly when your child is tardy. Please check the "Alerts" on your Parent Square App. If you’re receiving these notifications, please talk to your child at home so they avoid being assigned a detention and/or Saturday School.

We are very excited that we met our attendance goal for this past week, coming in at 95.31%. We didn't meet the daily goals on Friday. The breakdown by day was:

  • Monday 5/5: 96.4%
  • Tuesday 5/6: 96.1%
  • Wednesday 5/7: 96.8%
  • Thursday 5/8: 96.8%
  • Friday 5/9: 93.9%
  • Tardies this past week: 113 students with at least one tardy.
  • We saw improvement in unexcused absences.

We're a team, families! Let's continue to work together to keep striving for improved attendance and work together to talk to the students about why attendance is important!

Hawk of the Week

VBF

Ms. Vanessa Barbosa Fernandez

This week, we are proud to recognize Vanessa Barbosa Fernandez, our amazing attendance clerk, as our Hawk of the Week!

Vanessa joined Gavilan View in January, and in just a few short months, she has truly hit the ground running. She’s taken on her role with excellence, learning quickly and always going above and beyond. Vanessa greets every student, staff member, and visitor with a warm smile, setting a friendly and welcoming tone in the front office each day.

She has been incredibly supportive to parents working through the truancy and mediation process, offering both professionalism and compassion. Even on days when she’s held down the entire front office on her own, Vanessa has risen to the occasion without missing a beat.

This past week, with all the field trip documentation and coordination, Vanessa stayed organized, thorough, and on top of every detail. Her dedication, reliability, and positivity make her a true team player and a valuable asset to our school community.

Thank you, Vanessa, for everything you do to keep Gavilan View running smoothly!

May is...

AAPI

Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month 🌏🌺

May is Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor and celebrate the rich histories, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of AAPI individuals and communities across the United States. At school, students are learning about inspiring figures, traditions, and achievements that have shaped our world—and families can join in the celebration at home too!

Here are a few ways to celebrate together:
  • Try a new recipe from a country in Asia or the Pacific Islands.
  • Read a book by an AAPI author or featuring AAPI characters.
  • Watch a documentary or movie that explores AAPI culture and experiences.
  • Talk about the value of diversity and the importance of inclusion and representation.

Family-friendly resources to explore:
  • https://asianpacificheritage.gov/ – Government-curated stories, exhibits, and videos
  • PBS Kids’ AAPI Heritage Month collection
  • Books like Eyes That Kiss in the Corners by Joanna Ho or A Different Pond by Bao Phi
Let’s take this opportunity to learn, appreciate, and celebrate the beauty and strength of AAPI heritage—together!

Mental Health

💚 May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

This month, we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind ourselves that taking care of our mental and emotional well-being is just as important as physical health—especially for children and teens.

Middle school can be full of changes, challenges, and big emotions. Families play a vital role in creating safe spaces for kids to talk about how they’re feeling and learn healthy ways to cope with stress.

Here are a few ways to support mental health at home:
  • Check in regularly—ask open-ended questions like “What was the best part of your day?”
  • Encourage healthy routines like sleep, balanced meals, and screen breaks.
  • Practice calming strategies together such as deep breathing or short walks.
  • Normalize asking for help when emotions feel too big to handle alone.
Family-friendly resources to explore:

Let’s continue working together to build a school and home environment where every student feels supported, heard, and cared for—inside and out.
