Important Information: California Healthy Kids Survey
This week, your student was sent home with an important notice regarding participation in the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS). This survey is an important tool that helps us understand the needs of our students and school community, focusing on areas such as school connectedness, physical activity, nutrition, and behaviors that impact their well-being.

6th Grade: Permission Slips must be signed & returned

**7th & 8th Grade: A Notice was sent home. You only have to return it if you don't want your student completing the survey **

October Safety Drill - Thursday, October 17th
This Thursday, October 17th during 3rd period, students will participate in the California Great Shake Out.

On Thursday, we will hold a “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill and practice our protocols in the event of an earthquake.

Students will be asked to duck under their desks, hold on to a sturdy piece of furniture, and hold that position until the end of the drill.
 
Family Engagement Opportunities This Week
We have several family engagement opportunities this week:

Cafecito & School Site Council - This Thursday, October 17th we have a Cafecito & School Site Council.
5pm – 6pm: Cafecito in the Library
Topic: Attendance

6pm – 7pm: School Site Council in the Library
Topic: School Data & School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA)


Virtual Family Engagement Workshops - This Wednesday, October 16th is our fourth parent engagement workshop. This is a partnership with the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE). Join us virtually at 6pm! This week's topic is: General Academics

**NEW** Right At School - ELOP After School Program
We are now in the 2nd week of our new Right At School program after school at GVMS. We offer after school program until 6:00pm daily. To enroll students, you can do so using this link.

Our school Homework Centers will now be a part of the Right At School program

Report Cards Mailed Home
First Quarter report cards were mailed home. You should receive them some time this week.

If your child has any Ds or Fs, we want to highly encourage them to:
  • join the after school program
  • attend Saturday School
  • enroll in Saturday Academy Session II (enrollment information coming soon)

Student Devices - REMINDERS!
  • Cell phones, airpods, and all are to remain in backpacks on silent or turned off for the entirety of the day.
  • devices are not allowed to be used during breaks or lunch
  • **NEW** Students will be asked to put their phones in a basket before entering the bathroom if they're seen in pockets.
  • If students have electronic devices out, they will first be given a warning to put device way.
  • After one warning, the device will be confiscated and kept in the front office and returned after school
  • Students who have their devices taken more than once will to have them picked up by a parent or someone one their emergency contact list
  • All students were given these expectations in our welcome assemblies as well as in their own classes, we also announce these on our morning announcements daily
 
Fundraisers
We have two fundraisers taking place at Gavilan View.

1. Popcorn Fundraiser - Money Turn In Date Wed 10/9

Every student at our school is encouraged to sell popcorn. These funds are used to bring student events to our school campus. Extra packets are available in the front office.
Last day to turn in money is Wed, Oct 23rd.
Popcorn will be delivered in November.

2. Music Loaded Baked Potato Fundraiser - Friday, October 18th from 3:30pm to 7pm

Buy your tickets now & get your potato later! $10 per potato. Bring your tickets and pick up your delicious baked potato on Friday, October 18, 2024 from 3:30pm to 7:00pm.

Any help you can give our school by supporting our fundraisers is greatly appreciated!!!

This week, we are seeing a slight decline in attendance. Please remind your students that attendance counts every day. Every day, we learn something new and get an opportunity to experience something new. Here are the percentages for this week:

Grade 6: 95.65%
Grade 7: 95.13%
Grade 8: 94.18%

Let's keep improving our attendance! We want to get to 100%!

Field Trip Opportunities

7th Grade Families: Next week, we have our 7th grade field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Tuesday, October 22nd. The Monterey Rotary Club is sponsoring this trip for our school. This is a great privilege and wonderful opportunity.

To be eligible to participate in the field trip, students must exhibit good behavior and meet school expectations from Sept 30th - Oct 22nd.
Participation will be excluded if students:
  • have any pending Saturday Schools (for disciplinary reasons)
  • have had any suspensions this school year
  • are on structured break and/or lunch
  • commit any academic dishonesty
  • have 3 or more incidents in a classroom that would impact them from following the rules of the Aquarium (such as following directors, being disruptive, horse playing, etc.)

** 6th& 8th Grade Field Trips will be later this school year.
Washington DC Trip Planned for 2026 Spring Break
If you missed the Informational Meeting last week, students can talk to Mr. Zimmerman in room 22.

Fall Sports Weekly Schedule

6th Grade Flag Football has a game on Monday, Oct 14th at 5pm at Rabobank Stadium (1034 N. Main St.)

We have a Boys Soccer & Girls Volleyball game have tournament games on Tuesday. If they win, they'll have games on Wednesday. If they win Wednesday, they'll participate in the Championship games on Thursday.

6th Grade Girls Volleyball has a game on Thursday, Oct 17th at 5:15pm at the Salinas Rec Center (320 Lincoln Ave.)

Cross Country has a Meet on Friday, Oct 18th at 4:30pm at Laguna Seca (1021 Monterey Salinas Hwy)

Filipino American History Month is celebrated in the United States in October to recognize the history and contributions of Filipino Americans. The month also commemorates the first recorded arrival of Filipinos in the United States in 1587. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting important figures, traditions, and stories that have shaped our world.
