This week, we celebrate Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, a time to recognize the incredible individuals who make our school a safe, welcoming, and inspiring place for every student.
From the teachers who spark curiosity in the classroom, to the support staff who keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes—every member of our team plays a vital role in helping students grow, learn, and succeed.
Wednesday is also School Nurse's Day. We want to give an extra special thank you to Nurse Elizabeth Semmelmann and our Health Aide Susan Corona for all that they do to care for our students.
We invite families to join us in showing gratitude! A kind note, a drawing from your child, or even a simple “thank you” can go a long way in letting our staff know how much they are appreciated. Together, let’s make this week extra special for the amazing educators and staff who give so much to our students and school community.

We need your support in guiding our students toward healthy conflict resolution strategies. Recently, we've seen an increase in reports of peer conflicts and online cyberbullying among our 6th-grade students.
This week, Mrs. Antuna and Ms. Coronel will be visiting classrooms to talk about appropriate ways to resolve conflicts. We kindly ask that you continue this conversation at home. Please encourage your child to report any incidents to a trusted adult rather than escalating the situation.
Your partnership is essential in helping our students feel safe and supported.
Also, a reminder that a TDAP booster shot is required before entering 7th grade. Call your child’s health clinic today if it’s missing. Your 6th grader will receive a note from the school if they do not have a TDAP booster.

Families: A reminder that we’re working with students to improve attendance at Gavilan View. We need them here every day and arriving to school on time. They also should be arriving to each of their classes on time.
We send home notifications weekly when your child is tardy. Please check the "Alerts" on your Parent Square App. If you’re receiving these notifications, please talk to your child at home so they avoid being assigned a detention and/or Saturday School.
We met our attendance goal for this past week, coming in at 95.2%. We didn't meet the daily goals on Wednesday. The breakdown by day was:
-
Monday 4/28: 95.2%
-
Tuesday 4/29: 96.8%
-
Wednesday 4/30: 94.4%
-
Thursday 5/1: 96.8%
-
Friday 5/2: 94.1%
-
Tardies this Week: 77 students had at least one tardy this past week. Nine of them were tardy to only first period but 68 were tardy to a class later in the day.
We're a team, families! Let's continue to work together to keep striving for improved attendance and work together to talk to the students about why attendance is important!

This week, we are proud to recognize Aleida "Andy" Ramirez, one of our exceptional paraprofessionals in the Special Education program.
Andy goes above and beyond every single day. In the classroom, she is more than just support—she is a true co-teacher. She works side by side with students, helping them understand, grow, and thrive. Her commitment to their success is evident in everything she does, and it's no surprise that the kids absolutely adore her. This year, she has made a powerful impact on their academic and personal growth.
You’ll also find Andy out on the field during PE, motivating students and encouraging them to give their best. Her energy, patience, and positivity help students feel confident and supported in every setting.
Outside of class, Andy continues to be a steady, reassuring presence. Whether it’s during morning arrival or lunch supervision, students naturally gravitate toward her. She is a safe space, a listening ear, and a trusted adult for so many. It’s clear that her presence on campus is not only valued, but vital.
Andy is also a rock-solid teammate. Her colleagues see her as a dependable, thoughtful, and collaborative partner who uplifts others and steps up whenever needed.
Thank you, Andy, for being a light on our campus and for all that you do for our students and team. We are lucky to have you!

May is Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor and celebrate the rich histories, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of AAPI individuals and communities across the United States. At school, students are learning about inspiring figures, traditions, and achievements that have shaped our world—and families can join in the celebration at home too!
Here are a few ways to celebrate together:
- Try a new recipe from a country in Asia or the Pacific Islands.
- Read a book by an AAPI author or featuring AAPI characters.
- Watch a documentary or movie that explores AAPI culture and experiences.
- Talk about the value of diversity and the importance of inclusion and representation.
Family-friendly resources to explore:
-
https://asianpacificheritage.gov/ – Government-curated stories, exhibits, and videos
- PBS Kids’ AAPI Heritage Month collection
- Books like Eyes That Kiss in the Corners by Joanna Ho or A Different Pond by Bao Phi
Let’s take this opportunity to learn, appreciate, and celebrate the beauty and strength of AAPI heritage—together!

This month, we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind ourselves that taking care of our mental and emotional well-being is just as important as physical health—especially for children and teens.
Middle school can be full of changes, challenges, and big emotions. Families play a vital role in creating safe spaces for kids to talk about how they’re feeling and learn healthy ways to cope with stress.
Here are a few ways to support mental health at home:
- Check in regularly—ask open-ended questions like “What was the best part of your day?”
- Encourage healthy routines like sleep, balanced meals, and screen breaks.
- Practice calming strategies together such as deep breathing or short walks.
- Normalize asking for help when emotions feel too big to handle alone.
Family-friendly resources to explore:
Let’s continue working together to build a school and home environment where every student feels supported, heard, and cared for—inside and out.
