We’re in the Final Stretch!
With just a week and a half left of school, we encourage all families to stay on top of grades and assignments. Let’s help our students finish the 4th quarter strong!
This week, teachers are setting deadlines for any remaining or missing assignments. If your student has low grades or outstanding work, please remind them to connect with their teachers as soon as possible.
Please note: The last 3 days of school - May 27, 28, and 29 - are all minimum days.

Think pink and/or rock a fun jumpsuit! The more stylish, the better.
🎒 Thursday, 5/22 – Kid Backpack & Lunchbox Day
Throw it back to the elementary days—bring your best kid-sized backpack and lunchbox!
🖊️ Friday, 5/23 – Sign-a-Shirt/Memory Lane Day

It’s time to collect Chromebooks! Please make sure your student is ready to turn in their Chromebook, case/protector, and charger on their assigned day:
8th Grade – Monday, May 19
7th Grade – Tuesday, May 20
6th Grade – Thursday, May 22
🔌 Important Reminder for Families:
If any items are missing or damaged, families will be responsible for the cost of replacements:
Charger: $25
Screen repair: $75
Full Chromebook replacement: up to $355
Please help your student take good care of their Chromebook as we wrap up the school year!
🚨 A Note on TikTok Trends:
We’ve become aware of a harmful TikTok trend where students attempt to damage their Chromebook by inserting lead, magnets, or paper clips into the charging port. This is extremely dangerous and will result in serious consequences. Families will be held responsible for the full replacement cost of the Chromebook if this happens.
Let’s work together to keep our technology in great shape and end the year strong!

We need your support in guiding our students toward healthy conflict resolution strategies. Recently, we've seen an increase in reports of peer conflicts and online cyberbullying among our 6th-grade students.
This week, Mrs. Antuna and Ms. Coronel will be visiting classrooms to talk about appropriate ways to resolve conflicts. We kindly ask that you continue this conversation at home. Please encourage your child to report any incidents to a trusted adult rather than escalating the situation.
Your partnership is essential in helping our students feel safe and supported.
Also, a reminder that a TDAP booster shot is required before entering 7th grade. Call your child’s health clinic today if it’s missing. Your 6th grader will receive a note from the school if they do not have a TDAP booster.

Even in the final 1.5 weeks of school, attendance is critical!!!
Families: We send home notifications weekly when your child is tardy. Please check the "Alerts" on your Parent Square App. If you’re receiving these notifications, please talk to your child at home so they avoid being assigned a detention and/or missing out on Game Day.
We are very excited that we met our attendance goal for this past week, coming in at 95.04%. We didn't meet the daily goals on Friday. The breakdown by day was:
-
Monday 5/12: 94.3%
-
Tuesday 5/13: 95.5%
-
Wednesday 5/14: 96.1%
-
Thursday 5/15: 94.9%
-
Friday 5/16: 94.3%
-
Tardies this past week: 150 students with at least one tardy.
- We saw increase in excused and unexcused absences.
We're a team, families! Let's continue to work together to keep striving for improved attendance and work together to talk to the students about why attendance is important!

Ms. Adriana Ponce, our amazing Art teacher, made the news. As a recipient of a teacher grant, she'll be traveling to Oaxaca this summer to deepen her knowledge of the region and its vibrant culture—an experience that will directly enrich her art curriculum. She is one of 355 teachers across the US to receive this fellowship. We're so proud and happy for her!

This week’s Hawk of the Week goes to someone who truly embodies the heart and spirit of our school—Lynnae Lyles! As a Resource Program paraprofessional, Lynnae supports our students in the learning center with compassion, patience, and unwavering positivity. She’s not only a huge motivator for students, but also a trusted and dependable teammate for staff.
Whether she’s providing academic support in core classes or stepping in as a 1:1 aide, Lynnae consistently shows up with care and commitment. Teachers rave about how supportive she is, and it’s no surprise that students actively seek her out for help. Beyond the classroom, Lynnae is a safe, calming presence that students naturally gravitate toward. She’s someone they can confide in and rely on.
This past week, Lynnae went above and beyond, volunteering her time to chaperone both the 8th-grade field trip to Six Flags and the 6th-grade trip to the Zoo. Students were thrilled to be in her group—her fun, spirited energy made those experiences even more memorable!
Lynnae also helps with lunch supervision, where her warm presence continues to make an impact. She builds real connections with students and contributes to a positive school culture every single day. She is kind, fun, and simply one of the most genuine people you’ll ever meet.
Thank you, Lynnae, for all that you do. Gavilan View is a better place because of you!

May is Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor and celebrate the rich histories, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of AAPI individuals and communities across the United States. At school, students are learning about inspiring figures, traditions, and achievements that have shaped our world—and families can join in the celebration at home too!
Here are a few ways to celebrate together:
- Try a new recipe from a country in Asia or the Pacific Islands.
- Read a book by an AAPI author or featuring AAPI characters.
- Watch a documentary or movie that explores AAPI culture and experiences.
- Talk about the value of diversity and the importance of inclusion and representation.
Family-friendly resources to explore:
-
https://asianpacificheritage.gov/ – Government-curated stories, exhibits, and videos
- PBS Kids’ AAPI Heritage Month collection
- Books like Eyes That Kiss in the Corners by Joanna Ho or A Different Pond by Bao Phi
Let’s take this opportunity to learn, appreciate, and celebrate the beauty and strength of AAPI heritage—together!

This month, we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind ourselves that taking care of our mental and emotional well-being is just as important as physical health—especially for children and teens.
Middle school can be full of changes, challenges, and big emotions. Families play a vital role in creating safe spaces for kids to talk about how they’re feeling and learn healthy ways to cope with stress.
Here are a few ways to support mental health at home:
- Check in regularly—ask open-ended questions like “What was the best part of your day?”
- Encourage healthy routines like sleep, balanced meals, and screen breaks.
- Practice calming strategies together such as deep breathing or short walks.
- Normalize asking for help when emotions feel too big to handle alone.
Family-friendly resources to explore:
Let’s continue working together to build a school and home environment where every student feels supported, heard, and cared for—inside and out.
