Dear Gavilan View Community,

Home of the Hawks!

A Note from the Principals:

Last week was a blast, full of engaging activities. Amidst all the fun, we also held our popcorn fundraiser assemblies, completed a successful fire and evacuation drill, and welcomed KSBW to campus to film a segment on our school. We ended the week on a high note by welcoming parents for our first walking group on Friday morning!

This upcoming week promises to be just as exciting. It's Spirit Week, and we encourage all students to show their school spirit by dressing up for each theme day. The week will culminate with our first Rec Night of the year on Friday evening.

Looking ahead to the weekend, we're excited to launch our Saturday Academy this Saturday. We also have two fundraisers taking place, a baked potato sale and another popcorn sale. Your support for these events is incredibly helpful and directly benefits our school programs.

We want to see you join us this Friday for our Parent Walking Group!

Warmly,
Mrs. Antuna, Principal
Ms. Coronel, Assistant Principal

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conference week is next week from September 29th to October 3rd. First period teachers are reaching out to families to schedule a time for your conference.

If your child has a D or F (or is at risk of failing a class):
  • You will get a message from your child’s first period teacher to schedule a conference. During the conference, we’ll look at your child’s progress and talk through specific steps to help them improve.

If your child does not have any Ds or Fs:
  • You will get a ParentSquare message from the first period teacher sharing your child’s strengths and any updates they’d like you to know. A conference is not required, but you are always welcome to request one.

Even outside of conference week, we believe communication should be ongoing. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher anytime by ParentSquare, email, or phone. Conferences can also be scheduled at any point in the year if you feel one is needed.

Minimum Days all week : Sept 29 - Oct 3!

Walking Group

Join Our Parent Walking Group This Friday!

Last week, we kicked off our new Parent Walking Group, and we want to thank the parents who joined us! We'd love to see even more of our wonderful families out on the track this Friday, Sept. 26th, at 2:30 PM.

This is a fantastic way to get a little fresh air, move your body, and connect with other families. It's also a great way to support our school's Blue Zone goals, which focus on making healthy choices easier for everyone.

Walkers will get a free t-shirt and other goodies as a thank you for your support. It's not just for parents—we encourage you to bring the whole family to walk with us!

If you're in the car line for pickup, why not park your car and join us for a fun, easy walk before school lets out?! We'd love to see you there!

Finish the Quarter Strong!

With only two weeks left in the first quarter, now is the time to make a final push to improve grades. The quarter ends the first week of October, so it's a great time to ensure all assignments are submitted and grades are as high as they can be.

If your child has a D or F in any class, they can get help at our lunchtime Homework Centers, offered every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. We also have an after-school Homework Center on Wednesdays from 1:15 to 3:15 PM. These are great opportunities for students to get extra support and turn in any missing work.

PARENTS: YOUR SUPPORT IS CRUICIALl! Please help your child finish the quarter strong by:
  • Checking Aeries to stay updated on their grades.
  • Reviewing their trackers for homework and due dates.
  • Scheduling time for them to complete assignments.
  • Communicating with their teachers on ParentSquare.

Let's work together to show them that their grades matter!

  • Location: Gavilan View Middle School

Committees for the Event:
  • Altar building: (committee will meet in person the week of the 20th at GVMS, 1-2 days before Oct. 24th) setting up the altars, using boxes, table cloths, picture frames, candles, and other decorative objects on theme for the event. This committee will be supported by high school students.

If you work at a Mexican bakery, or know someone who does, we would love to have free sweet bread to offer families as well as hot chocolate.
  • Marigold flower donations: (this group can be organized over the phone or via email) We are looking for these flowers to be donated by local businesses or farmers, we would like to hand out a flower to every visiting family the night of our event. This committee is involved in helping find a place where we can solicit flower donations.
  • Picture frames: If you have them, please feel free to send in empty picture frames that you may have available at your homes. We want picture frames to offer to families who may only be able to bring in a picture.

Your support is invaluable, and we are so excited to have you join us in making this community event a reality!

Hawk of the Week

Stellar Staff Member

niven

Terresa Niven

This week's Hawk of the Week is Terresa Niven, our incredible 6th and 7th-grade special education teacher! Although she's new to our campus this year, Ms. Niven has quickly become an invaluable part of our team.

Her colleagues nominated her for her exceptional ability to balance multiple big projects, especially this past week. She truly went above and beyond, and her hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed.  Beyond her professional duties, she has a natural gift for creating a welcoming and supportive classroom where students feel safe, seen, and valued, making learning a joyful experience.

Ms. Niven's commitment to our school and her students was on full display this past week. She volunteered to serve on the teacher panel for the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools site visit, sharing how technology is being used to help her students succeed. On top of that, she participated in a math curriculum site visit on Tuesday, where her powerful instructional strategies and teaching skills were highlighted.

We are so grateful for her contributions and for the amazing energy she brings to our community. Thank you, Ms. Niven!

September is...

Suicide Prevention Month & Hispanic Heritage Month

HHM

Hispanic Heritage Month

This month, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! From September 15 to October 15, we recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. It's a time to honor the rich traditions and diverse backgrounds of people whose ancestry is from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

At school, our students will be learning about notable figures, historical events, and the vibrant cultures that make up the Hispanic community. They will explore the art, music, food, and traditions that have had a profound impact on our society.

You can join the celebration at home by exploring Hispanic culture with your family!
  • Cook together: Try a new recipe from a Spanish-speaking country.
  • Listen to music: Explore different genres like mariachi, salsa, or reggaeton.
  • Read together: Look for books that feature Hispanic authors or stories.
  • Watch a film: Find movies or documentaries that highlight Hispanic culture and history.

To learn more, we encourage you to explore resources like the National Hispanic Heritage Month website, which offers a wide range of information and exhibits. You can find it here: https://www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov/

We look forward to celebrating and learning alongside our students throughout this special month!

SPM

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. This is a time for all of us to raise awareness about this critical public health issue, reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, and share resources that can save lives. It is a month to remember those we have lost and to focus on hope and healing.

At school, we encourage students to reach out to a trusted adult—a teacher, a counselor, or a principal—if they or a friend are in distress.
At home, you can play a vital role in suicide prevention by creating an environment where your child feels comfortable talking about their feelings.
  • Start the conversation: Don't be afraid to talk openly and honestly about mental health and show them that it's okay to talk about difficult topics.
  • Listen without judgment: Create a safe space for your child to share their thoughts and feelings.
  • Know the warning signs: Be aware of significant changes in your child's behavior, mood, or eating/sleeping habits.
  • Take action: If you are concerned, seek professional help immediately.

A powerful, immediate resource is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Anyone can call or text 988 anytime, day or night, to connect with a trained crisis counselor.

For more information and resources on how to talk to your child and support their mental well-being, we recommend visiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's website: https://afsp.org/

Thank you for being our partner in keeping our students healthy and safe.
