Dear Gavilan View Community,

Home of the Hawks!

A Note from the Principals:

We hope your family had a fantastic weekend to recharge after such a fun and spirited week at school! We loved seeing the participation during Spirit Week, the energy at the Popcorn Pick Up, and the creativity and excitement during Friday’s Halloween/Game Day. Thank you for helping us make these events successful and memorable for our students.

Parent Engagement Month: Join Us Wednesday!
As November officially kicks off Parent Engagement Month, we want to encourage your direct involvement this week.
Please join us this Wednesday evening for an important opportunity to connect and contribute:
  • Cafecito (4pm): A chance to chat informally with administrators.
  • School Site Council (SSC) (5pm): An essential meeting where decisions that guide our school plan and budget are made.
Parent voices are vital to our success, and these meetings are the best way to stay informed and influence our school community!
Urgent Request: California Healthy Kids Survey Extension
We need your help with an urgent request regarding the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) Parent Survey.

This data is absolutely crucial—it directly guides our school goals and informs our planning for student achievement. Unfortunately, we have only heard back from about 100 families so far. To ensure we have an accurate picture of our school environment, we have extended the deadline!

Please take a few minutes this week to complete the short, confidential survey. Your voice truly matters in this process.

Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to our school. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday and reading your valuable survey responses!

Warmly,
Mrs. Antuna, Principal
Ms. Coronel, Assistant Principal

⚠️ Important Safety Alert: Paper Airplanes

We want to inform you of a recent, concerning trend we have observed on campus: a rise in students modifying paper airplanes with sharp, hidden objects before throwing them.

Students are reinforcing paper planes with items like broken paper clips or sewing needles so the planes will stick into ceiling panels.

This is dangerous and unacceptable behavior that could cause injury to students and staff.

Please speak with your child tonight about the seriousness of this issue. Reinforce that:
  • Safety is Our Top Priority: Even as a prank, using sharp objects in this manner poses a real threat of injury to anyone walking nearby.
  • Consequences Will Be Issued: Any student caught creating, possessing, or throwing a paper airplane reinforced with sharp objects will face consequences.

We appreciate your partnership in emphasizing the importance of school safety and respect for our learning environment.

CHKS

California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) Parent Survey

In an effort to receive more submissions, WE'VE EXTENDED THE DEADLINE ONE MORE WEEK!

Please complete the California Healthy Kids Survey by November 7th.
We value the input and opinion of our parents/guardians. If you could take a few moments to fill out our parent survey, it would be great appreciated. This data directly impacts decisions that we make on our campus.
Thank you for helping to make GVMS great!

Shelter in Place Drill - Wednesday

This Wednesday, November 5th, our students and staff will participate in a scheduled Shelter in Place drill.

This is a safety practice designed to prepare students for situations where it is safer to remain securely inside the building than to evacuate.

What is a Shelter in Place?
Schools use a Shelter in Place protocol when there is an environmental hazard outside the building. This might include:
  • Weather-related threats (like a severe thunderstorm or hail).
  • Environmental hazards (such as nearby smoke or chemical fumes).
  • An animal on campus (like a loose dog or wild animal).

Homework Contracts Updates

If your child is struggling in a class and has a D or F, they were assigned a Homework Contract.

They have a bright green paper that should have their signature, your signature, and a teacher signature. This paper gets signed every time they go to Homework Center.  There is also a grade check on the back, where they write in their grades every Friday, have teachers sign, and then have you sign over the weekend. Students turn in the Contracts on Mondays at Lunch in Rm 12 to be checked.

Please remind your student that they are expected to be going to Homework Center at least 1 hour each week.  Homework Center is offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday at lunch in Room 12, and on Wednesday from 1:15-3:15pm in Room 1.

Hawk of the Week

Stellar Staff Member

Daisy Ruiz

This week, we are thrilled to recognize Daisy Ruiz as our Hawk of the Week! As one of our dedicated Campus Health & Safety Specialists, Daisy is often the person you see handling everything, and this past week proved just how essential she is. Despite working a demanding schedule on her own, she expertly managed to cover all her main responsibilities, ensuring our campus remained safe and supervised. Her reliability shines through every day; you can often spot Daisy efficiently cruising across campus in the golf cart, quickly getting to where she is needed most for student follow-up and supervision.

Daisy is known across our community as a constant, reassuring presence. Students and staff deeply appreciate her professionalism and dedication to keeping our environment secure. Beyond her crucial safety duties, Daisy gives back to our students as a valued coach for both the 6th/7th-grade boys soccer team and the 6th-grade girls volleyball team, sharing her love of sports and teamwork.

Anyone who has the pleasure of interacting with Daisy knows her defining qualities: she is genuinely kind, caring, and funny. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated, flexible, and positive member of our staff. Thank you, Daisy, for everything you do to support our students both on and off the field!

November is...

Family Engagement Month & Native American Heritage Month

heart hands

Family Engagement Month

This month, we shine a special light on Family Engagement Month, celebrating the essential partnership between our school and you, our middle school families.

As your students navigate the middle school years, your support remains one of the most powerful predictors of their success! Research shows that active family engagement leads to:
  • Higher grades and better attendance.
  • Improved organizational and study skills.
  • A stronger sense of belonging for your student at school.
While your student is growing more independent, the way you engage with their education simply shifts, it doesn't stop!

🚀 Ways to Get Involved at the Middle School Level:
We know your time is valuable, so here are a few ways to partner with us this month and beyond:
  • Be a Homework & Habits Coach: Establish a quiet, consistent time and space for homework and studying. Ask specific questions like, "What did you learn in Science today?" or "What's your plan for that project?" This simple home-based check-in is vital.
  • Attend Key Events: Mark your calendar for events like School Site Council and upcoming school events like our Cafecito or Parent Walking Group. Showing up makes a big impact.
  • Join Our School Committees: Consider joining the ELAC, Safety Committee, or a School Site Council. Your voice and perspective are crucial to our decision-making.
  • Monitor Progress Digitally: Log in to our Aeries Parent Portal weekly to check grades, attendance, and assignment due dates. Knowing what's happening helps you catch issues early.
This month, let's recommit to working together. Your involvement truly makes a difference in our vibrant middle school community!

NAHM

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month

This month, we join the nation in celebrating National Native American Heritage Month. This is a vital opportunity for all families to honor the rich cultures, deep histories, and ongoing contributions of Native American and Indigenous Peoples.

The most important takeaway for our children is this: Native Americans are not a relic of the past; they are diverse, contemporary peoples who continue to enrich our world today.

Simple Ways to Promote Diversity at Home:
  1. Acknowledge the Land: Talk to your children about the original stewards of the land where we live. You can visit the Native Land Digital map online to find out which Indigenous tribe's territory our community is on. This is a powerful, respectful learning opportunity.
  2. Read Books by Native Authors: Visit the library or a local bookstore and seek out children's and young adult books written and illustrated by Native American creators.
  3. Explore Culture through Food: Research traditional foods of the Americas (like corn, squash, and beans) or try an authentic recipe from a specific tribe.
  4. Be a Critical Media Consumer: Talk to your children about how Native people are often portrayed in movies, TV, or sports mascots. Discuss why stereotypes are harmful and what true, respectful representation looks like.
Let's make this November a time for deep, respectful family learning about the diverse and resilient Indigenous cultures that shape our world.
