Dear Gavilan View Community,
|
Dear Families,
We just wrapped up an incredible week of growth! From our girls' basketball teams taking home 2nd place in the championships to the upcoming launch of our new Mental Fitness groups, the momentum on campus is palpable. Our students are showing up with heart, and we are committed to keeping that energy going as we enter a very busy first week of February.
This week is all about Spirit Week! We have fun, creative themes planned for every day to celebrate our school pride. Amidst the fun, we are also focusing on academic excellence as we begin ELPAC testing and continue enforcing Homework Contracts. On Wednesday, we look forward to celebrating our 2nd Quarter Honor Roll students as certificates are distributed. That evening, we will also host a vital 8th-grade parent meeting for students with a 2.0 GPA or below to ensure every Hawk has a clear flight path toward promotion.
We’ll wrap up the week with a strong focus on student well-being. On Friday, Montage Health will be on campus for vaping prevention assemblies, followed by a high-energy Rec Night to kick off the weekend. Whether it’s through academic accountability or health education, our goal remains the same: showing our students that we care deeply about their success and their safety.
Warmly,
Mrs. Antuna, Principal
Ms. Coronel, Assistant Principal

Students who are classified as English Learners will begin the ELPAC test this month.
This test is very important and shows how much English they’ve mastered this year. If they do well on the test, they could potentially reclassify out of the program.
Please encourage your students to do well. And as always, anytime students are taking tests, help us make sure they are getting enough sleep, eating breakfast, and getting to school on time.

A critical parent meeting is scheduled for all 8th-grade students with a current GPA of 2.0 or below.
It is essential that a parent/guardian and the student attend this meeting to discuss the student's academic standing and how their current grades may affect Promotion.
We will be reviewing academic expectations and developing a plan for success for the remainder of the year. Students must bring their Chromebooks to the meeting.
|
|
If your child had a D or an F in the second quarter, they were assigned a Homework Contract.
Student Expectations:
- Every week, students must attend Homework Center for at least 1 hour a week.
- They also have to have their teachers sign a weekly progress report every Friday and their 6th period teacher will collect the report.

We want to extend a massive congratulations to our 7th and 8th-grade girls' basketball teams for their incredible performance in the league’s championship games this past Monday! Both teams displayed heart, teamwork, and grit, ultimately bringing home 2nd place trophies. We are so incredibly proud of how these young athletes represented our school through their sportsmanship and determination.
A special thank you goes out to Mr. Torres for his dedication and leadership throughout the season. His commitment to coaching and mentoring these students was instrumental in their success on and off the court.

We are excited to launch Mental Fitness Groups on campus starting this Wednesday, February 4th! We’re welcoming Mrs. Elizabeth, LMFT, from OHANA, who will be working with students during their PE classes to explore healthy habits that build strong mental health. Just like we train our bodies in the gym, these sessions are designed to help our Hawks "work out" their minds, giving them practical tools to stay resilient, focused, and healthy. We are so glad to have Elizabeth's expertise on our team each week!

We are thrilled to announce Mr. Jake Flores as our Hawk of the Week! Nominated by his peers for his exceptional leadership, Mr. Flores serves as our dedicated Athletic Director and a pillar of support for our sports programs. Most recently, he was instrumental in navigating the 7th and 8th-grade basketball seasons, providing steady guidance and flexibility when unexpected changes arose with the League’s Tournament. His professionalism ensures our student-athletes can focus on the game, knowing they have a fierce advocate in their corner.
Beyond sports, Mr. Flores’s commitment to student success is unparalleled. He consistently goes above and beyond as a mentor and academic advisor, stepping in to support students the moment their grades begin to slip. Every regular school day, you can find him running the Homework Centers during lunch, offering a quiet, supportive space for students to stay on track. He also understands the importance of balance, organizing weekly lunchtime activities like "Ice Fishing," Pickleball, and hula hoop contests to keep our campus spirit high and our students active.
Mr. Flores’s impact is just as profound among his colleagues. As the 8th-grade lead teacher and a vital member of the school leadership team, he provides a clear, thoughtful voice for his team. He is the ultimate "team player" who never hesitates to lend a hand, whether it’s covering a class when we’re short on subs or offering his expertise on a project. Kind, professional, and endlessly respectful, Jake is an "overall helper" who makes our school a better place every single day.

Attendance is important! We’ve been working really hard to minimize tardies both in the morning and students showing up to their classes late. We need your help families!
- Please talk to your children about the importance of going to school every day and showing up on time for every class!
- This week, we started the week strong but had low attendance on Friday.
- Our average was 94.75% for the week.
- We had 75 students late in the morning at least one day this past week, 34 students with period tardies.
Students with repetitive tardies will be assigned an Attendance Accountability Project

As we enter February, we are proud to recognize Black History Month—a time to honor the rich history, achievements, and enduring contributions of the Black community.
At our school, this month carries deep significance. Recent feedback from our students has highlighted a sobering reality: our Black students are among those who report feeling the lowest sense of belonging, and many have shared that they still face the pain of hearing racial slurs on campus. As a community of Hawks, we are committed to changing this narrative, ensuring that every student feels safe, respected, and celebrated for who they are.
We invite our families to join us in this work by bringing the conversation home. Celebrating Black history isn't just about the past; it’s about building empathy and understanding for the present. By discussing these topics as a family, you help reinforce the values of kindness and inclusion that we strive for every day at school. Whether it’s watching a documentary together, reading a book by a Black author, or having an honest talk about the impact of our words, your engagement makes a world of difference.
To support these important family conversations, here are a few helpful resources:
