Dear Gavilan View Community,
|
Dear Families,
We hope you are enjoying the long weekend! After a high-energy week of school spirit and some great discussions during our 8th-grade parent meetings, we are ready to dive into a week focused on future goals and academic progress. While there is no school this Monday, we hit the ground running on Tuesday as we continue our ELPAC testing and wrap up 3rd Quarter Progress Reports. These reports will be mailed home over the upcoming weekend, providing a clear picture of your child’s current standing and growth.
For our 8th-grade students, this is a particularly exciting week as we look toward the horizon. Representatives from the high schools will be on campus to meet with our 8th graders and help them sign up for next year’s classes. It is a major milestone in their journey, and we are here to support them as they take these next steps. We are also looking forward to seeing our students' athletic talents on display as Spring sports tryouts officially begin this week!
We will conclude our week on Friday with Pink Shirt Day, a day dedicated to promoting kindness and standing together against bullying. By wearing pink, our Hawks send a powerful message of inclusion and support for one another. Whether we are preparing for high school or starting a new sports season, our priority remains the same: nurturing both the academic success and the character of every student. Thank you for your continued partnership!
Warmly,
Mrs. Antuna, Principal
Ms. Coronel, Assistant Principal

Students who are classified as English Learners will continue the ELPAC test this month.
This test is very important and shows how much English they’ve mastered this year. If they do well on the test, they could potentially reclassify out of the program.
Please encourage your students to do well. And as always, anytime students are taking tests, help us make sure they are getting enough sleep, eating breakfast, and getting to school on time.

Parents/Families,
Please share your voice as we reflect on what our district, SRUSD, is doing well and things where we can improve. Your input helps guide our planning and decision making. YOUR VOICE MATTERS!

Our new Mental Fitness Groups launched last week!
Mrs. Elizabeth, LMFT, from OHANA, will be working with students during their PE classes to explore healthy habits that build strong mental health. Just like we train our bodies in the gym, these sessions are designed to help our Hawks "work out" their minds, giving them practical tools to stay resilient, focused, and healthy.
If your child would like to join, please have them talk to Mrs. Antuna or Ms. Coronel this week. This is a great program! Don't miss out!

We are incredibly proud to name Paula Ruiz as our Hawk of the Week! As our English Learner Specialist and primary ELD teacher, Ms. Ruiz was nominated by her peers for her tireless work ethic and her deep commitment to student success. With ELPAC testing kicking off this month, Ms. Ruiz has been the engine behind the scenes. From training proctors and coordinating complex testing facilities to meticulously aligning teacher and student schedules, she ensures our entire campus is prepared. Her leadership was also on full display at the end of January during our ELAC meeting, where she partnered with administration to provide families with vital resources and tips to support their children through the testing process.
Ms. Ruiz's dedication to her students goes far beyond logistics; she is their biggest advocate and motivator. She works daily to inspire her students to reach their full potential, with the ultimate goal of seeing them reclassify out of the program. You can find her in her classroom every day at lunch, providing a welcoming space for students who need extra academic support or just a word of encouragement. Her impact reaches our staff as well; colleagues share that they feel deeply supported by Ms. Ruiz's coaching, as she frequently shares effective strategies that help every teacher on campus better serve our English Learners.
As a vital member of our school leadership team, Ms. Ruiz provides an invaluable perspective that helps shape the direction of Gavilan View. She is a professional who leads with her heart, which is evident in her current initiative: running a Valentine’s Grams fundraiser to support our students and families experiencing hardship. Ms. Ruiz cares deeply for every member of our community, and we are truly lucky to have her expertise, her kindness, and her passion on our team.
Congratulations, Ms. Ruiz!

Attendance is important! We’ve been working really hard to minimize tardies both in the morning and students showing up to their classes late. We need your help families!
- Please talk to your children about the importance of going to school every day and showing up on time for every class!
- This week, we had low attendance on Monday, Wednesday, and especially on Friday.
- Our average was 94.98% for the week.
- We had 64 students late in the morning at least one day this past week, 38 students with period tardies.
Students with repetitive tardies will be assigned an Attendance Accountability Project

As we enter February, we are proud to recognize Black History Month—a time to honor the rich history, achievements, and enduring contributions of the Black community.
At our school, this month carries deep significance. Recent feedback from our students has highlighted a sobering reality: our Black students are among those who report feeling the lowest sense of belonging, and many have shared that they still face the pain of hearing racial slurs on campus. As a community of Hawks, we are committed to changing this narrative, ensuring that every student feels safe, respected, and celebrated for who they are.
We invite our families to join us in this work by bringing the conversation home. Celebrating Black history isn't just about the past; it’s about building empathy and understanding for the present. By discussing these topics as a family, you help reinforce the values of kindness and inclusion that we strive for every day at school. Whether it’s watching a documentary together, reading a book by a Black author, or having an honest talk about the impact of our words, your engagement makes a world of difference.
To support these important family conversations, here are a few helpful resources:
