Dear Gavilan View Community,
|
Dear Families,
We hope you are enjoying the extra time with your loved ones during this long weekend! As we return to campus this Tuesday, we are entering a week centered on character and celebration. It is Kindness Week at Gavilan View, and we are encouraging all our Hawks to lead with empathy and positivity in everything they do. We are also excited to celebrate the Lunar New Year, honoring the diverse traditions that make our school community so vibrant.
Academically, we are staying focused and moving forward. We continue with ELPAC testing, and our 8th graders have a big day on Tuesday as North Salinas High School representatives visit our campus to help them select their classes for next year. This is a pivotal moment as they prepare for their transition to high school! Additionally, please keep an eye on your mailbox, as 3rd Quarter Progress Reports should be arriving home sometime this week. These are a great tool for discussing academic goals with your child.
With rain in the forecast, safety will be our top priority this week. We ask for your patience and extra caution during drop-off and pick-up to ensure all our students stay safe and dry. Despite the weather, our students' energy remains high as Spring sports tryouts continue! Whether we are practicing kindness or preparing for the future, your partnership is what helps our students soar.
Warmly,
Mrs. Antuna, Principal
Ms. Coronel, Assistant Principal

With more rain in the forecast this week, we want to ensure our Hawks stay safe, dry, and on time! Please make sure students come dressed in appropriate rain gear to stay comfortable throughout the day.
We also ask for your extra patience in the parking lot during drop-off and pick-up. For the safety of everyone, please do not block any entryways, and always keep the bus lanes clear so our transportation can remain on schedule.
Additionally, please be aware that Boronda Road will be closed at McKinnon starting next week. Between the road closures and the weather, traffic will likely be heavier than usual. Please plan your commute accordingly to ensure students still arrive on time for a great day of learning. Thank you for helping us keep our campus safe and accessible!

Students who are classified as English Learners will continue the ELPAC test this month.
This test is very important and shows how much English they’ve mastered this year. If they do well on the test, they could potentially reclassify out of the program.
Please encourage your students to do well. And as always, anytime students are taking tests, help us make sure they are getting enough sleep, eating breakfast, and getting to school on time.

We are incredibly proud to recognize Alexis Romero as our Hawk of the Week! As our Special Day Class teacher, Ms. Romero was nominated by her peers for her tireless work ethic and her ability to masterfully teach all core subjects—Math, ELA, Science, and History. Anytime you step into her classroom, the environment is one of high engagement and care. She has been working exceptionally hard to deliver top-tier, customized instruction, ensuring that every student on her caseload receives the specific, individualized support they need to thrive academically.
Ms. Romero’s expertise shines particularly bright in her holistic approach to student advocacy. She does a fantastic job formulating IEPs that address the "whole child," and she serves as a fierce advocate for her students’ needs during meetings. By maintaining regular, clear communication with families, she ensures that parents are true partners in reaching student goals and fully understand the services their children receive. Though she is only in her second year, Ms. Romero has already become a vital resource to her colleagues; she is extremely collaborative and always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone on the team.
We are also thrilled to see a new side of Ms. Romero this month as she steps into her role as our new 6th and 7th-grade Girls' Soccer Coach! With tryouts currently underway, she has been incredibly busy on the field, encouraging our young Lady Hawks to get involved and stay active. Whether she is motivating students to push themselves in the classroom or inspiring them to give their best on the field, Ms. Romero goes above and beyond to build their confidence. We are so lucky to have her passion and leadership at Gavilan View. Congratulations, Ms. Romero!

This Tuesday, we are excited to celebrate the Lunar New Year! This vibrant holiday, celebrated by many cultures around the world, marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. It is a time for family, reflection, and wishes for prosperity and good fortune.
At Gavilan View, we love honoring the diverse traditions that make our community so special. We encourage our Hawks to take a moment this Tuesday to learn about the customs of the Lunar New Year and celebrate the spirit of new beginnings together. We wish a very happy and prosperous New Year to all our families celebrating!

As we enter February, we are proud to recognize Black History Month—a time to honor the rich history, achievements, and enduring contributions of the Black community.
At our school, this month carries deep significance. Recent feedback from our students has highlighted a sobering reality: our Black students are among those who report feeling the lowest sense of belonging, and many have shared that they still face the pain of hearing racial slurs on campus. As a community of Hawks, we are committed to changing this narrative, ensuring that every student feels safe, respected, and celebrated for who they are.
We invite our families to join us in this work by bringing the conversation home. Celebrating Black history isn't just about the past; it’s about building empathy and understanding for the present. By discussing these topics as a family, you help reinforce the values of kindness and inclusion that we strive for every day at school. Whether it’s watching a documentary together, reading a book by a Black author, or having an honest talk about the impact of our words, your engagement makes a world of difference.
To support these important family conversations, here are a few helpful resources:
