Dear Gavilan View Community,

Home of the Hawks!

Principal’s Message: Your Voice and Our Vision!

Dear Families,
It’s the last week of February, and our Hawks are excelling, through and through! We are ending the month on a high note by celebrating the beautiful diversity that makes Gavilan View so special. As we wrap up our Black History Month celebrations, we also want to extend our best wishes to our students and families who have begun observing Ramadan and Lent. At GVMS, honoring these traditions and cultures is a vital part of helping every student feel a true sense of belonging.

This week, we are asking for your partnership and voice. On Monday evening, please join us for a Community Town Hall Meeting to discuss campus health and safety. We also invite you to complete the online LCAP survey to provide your feedback on our school’s goals and funding. Your input is the compass that helps us navigate our school’s future. Additionally, we look forward to seeing our 8th-grade families this Tuesday evening for our Promotion Parent Meeting to discuss the exciting road to graduation!

We have plenty of moments to capture and celebrate this week as well. Monday is Spring Picture Day, so make sure those Hawks are ready to smile! Academically, we are staying the course with ELPAC testing and the consistent enforcement of Homework Contracts. Finally, please join us this Friday afternoon at the Northridge Mall for the Pink Shirt Day event, where our very own GVMS artwork will be on display. Thank you for your continued support and for being such an active part of our community!

Warmly,
Mrs. Antuna, Principal

ELPAC

ELPAC Testing Continues this Week

Students who are classified as English Learners will continue the ELPAC test this month.

We have two more weeks of the Listening & Speaking portions of the test. The Reading and Writing portions will be taken in March.

This test is very important and shows how much English they’ve mastered this year. If they do well on the test, they could potentially reclassify out of the program.

Please encourage your students to do well. And as always, anytime students are taking tests, help us make sure they are getting enough sleep, eating breakfast, and getting to school on time.

Hawk of the Week

Stellar Staff Member

Lynnae

Lynnae Lyles

We are proud to celebrate Lynnae Lyles as our Hawk of the Week! As a dedicated paraprofessional, Ms. Lynnae was nominated by her peers for her tireless work ethic and her ability to connect with students across our campus. While she primarily supports our Learning Centers, she also pushes into a variety of other classrooms with one clear goal: ensuring every student feels capable and supported in their studies. Students naturally gravitate toward her kind, gentle, and joyful demeanor, making her a trusted figure at our school. Her commitment extends beyond the bell, as she frequently lends her time to the after-school Homework Center and provides lunchtime support whenever she isn't busy with yard duty.

Ms. Lynnae’s impact is felt deeply through her mentorship and leadership. Recently, she has stepped up to support administration by guiding students through Accountability Projects related to attendance and truancy. In this role, she mentors students through thoughtful reflection, helping them understand the importance of being present and engaged. Furthermore, when students approached her about starting an Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Club, she didn’t hesitate to say yes. Proud of her heritage, Ms. Lynnae provides a weekly space for students to celebrate their history and culture, fostering a sense of belonging while spreading awareness across the entire campus.

Beyond the classroom and club meetings, Ms. Lynnae is a vital part of our athletic department. After co-coaching Cross Country in the fall, she has stepped up again as our Track co-coach. You can often find her practicing and staying active right alongside the students, leading by example and pushing them to reach their personal bests. Whether she is helping a student solve a math problem, reflecting on life goals, or sprinting on the track, Ms. Lynnae goes above and beyond to motivate our Hawks to succeed in every arena. We are so lucky to have her on our team!

Attendance Matters!

attendance

Help us to get to 100% attendance!

Attendance is important! We’ve been working really hard to minimize tardies both in the morning and students showing up to their classes late. We need your help families!

  • Please talk to your children about the importance of going to school every day and showing up on time for every class!
  • Our average was 96.10% for the week, which is a slight decrease from last week.
  • If your child is absent, please make sure to call us and tell us the reason.
  • We had 98 students late in the morning at least one day this past week, 25 students with period tardies.

Students with repetitive tardies will be assigned an Attendance Accountability Project

February is...

Black History Month & Ramadan

Ramadan

Honoring the Month of Ramadan

This week marks the beginning of Ramadan, a month of fasting, reflection, and community observed by many of our students and families. Ramadan takes place from February 17 to March 19.

At Gavilan View, we want to ensure all our Hawks feel supported during this time. We are mindful that students who are fasting may have different energy levels or needs during lunch and PE. If your child is observing Ramadan and requires any specific accommodations or a quiet space during the lunch hour, please encourage them to reach out to their teachers or the front office. We wish a peaceful and meaningful Ramadan to all in our community who are celebrating!

lent

Observing the Season of Lent

This past week also marked the beginning of Lent for many of our students and families. For those in our community who observe this tradition, Lent is a 40-day period of reflection, prayer, and preparation from February 18th to April 2nd. It is often a time when individuals choose to give something up or focus on acts of service and charity to help others.

As we celebrate the diverse faiths and traditions at Gavilan View, we want to ensure every student feels respected and supported in their personal observances. Whether your family is observing Lent, Ramadan, or any other cultural tradition this spring, we value the diverse perspectives you bring to our Hawk family. We wish a meaningful and reflective season to all who are participating!

BHM

Celebrating Black History Month Together!

As we enter February, we are proud to recognize Black History Month—a time to honor the rich history, achievements, and enduring contributions of the Black community.

At our school, this month carries deep significance. Recent feedback from our students has highlighted a sobering reality: our Black students are among those who report feeling the lowest sense of belonging, and many have shared that they still face the pain of hearing racial slurs on campus. As a community of Hawks, we are committed to changing this narrative, ensuring that every student feels safe, respected, and celebrated for who they are.

We invite our families to join us in this work by bringing the conversation home. Celebrating Black history isn't just about the past; it’s about building empathy and understanding for the present. By discussing these topics as a family, you help reinforce the values of kindness and inclusion that we strive for every day at school. Whether it’s watching a documentary together, reading a book by a Black author, or having an honest talk about the impact of our words, your engagement makes a world of difference.
