Welcome to May! With only four weeks left in the school year, the finish line is officially in sight. This week is particularly special as we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. We are so grateful for the dedication and passion our educators bring to the classroom every day, and we also look forward to honoring our wonderful health office team on Wednesday for School Nurse’s Day. It is a busy week for our students as well, as we conduct iReady Diagnostic testing in Reading and Math alongside state testing make-ups. We appreciate your help in ensuring your students arrive on time and ready to show what they’ve learned!
Beyond the classroom, we have several exciting ways to connect and celebrate. Please join us for the District Townhall meeting on Monday evening, and don't miss our beautiful Spring Concert this Wednesday, where our talented musicians will take the stage. As we count down these final weeks, we remain committed to finishing the year with focus and Hawk pride. Thank you for your continued partnership and for making this community so vibrant.
We are incredibly fortunate to have a wonderful team of teachers at Gavilan View. We encourage families and students to show your appreciation. It doesn’t have to be anything big – just a little thank you or handwritten card – goes a long way!
Thank you to Nurse Elizabeth and Health Aide Susana!

We are incredibly honored to name Maritza Jimenez as our Hawk of the Week! Nominated by her peers for being an incredible Super Sub, Ms. Jimenez is a vital part of the Gavilan View family. Every single day, she steps into our classrooms with a level of professionalism and skill that ensures our students never miss a beat when their teachers are away. Whether she is delivering a complex lesson plan or managing a classroom, she does so with a fantastic energy that keeps our Hawks focused and on track. As one colleague put it: "She can do anything! We do not function without her."
Ms. Jimenez’s dedication extends far beyond traditional substituting. Whenever she isn't assigned to a specific class, she immediately "pushes in" to Math and English classrooms to offer extra support to students who need it most. Her impact is felt every Wednesday after school as well, where she is a staple of our Homework Center. She has a unique talent for breaking down difficult information and helping students navigate their assignments with confidence. This past week, she was an absolute hero during state testing, proctoring exams and providing a calm, supportive environment for students in our separate testing settings.
What makes Ms. Jimenez truly exceptional is her willingness to help in every corner of the campus. When the front office is short-staffed, she steps in with excellent customer service and utilizes her bilingual skills to support our families. From stocking teachers with supplies and helping with classroom management to assisting with promotion preparations, she handles every task with a positive and steady energy. She truly embodies the spirit of a team player, and we are so lucky to have her as a permanent fixture at GVMS. Thank you, Ms. Jimenez, for everything you do!
Attendance Matters!
Help us to get to 100% attendance!
We need your help families!
Attendance is important! We’ve been working really hard to minimize tardies both in the morning and students showing up to their classes late.Â
Please talk to your children about the importance of going to school every day and showing up on time for every class!
Our average was 94.88% for the week, which dipped from last week.
If your child is absent, please make sure to call us and tell us the reason.
We had 83 students late in the morning at least one day this past week, 61 students with period tardies.
Students with repetitive tardies will be assigned an Attendance Accountability Project.
May is...
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month & Mental Health Awareness Month
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich history, diverse cultures, and incredible contributions of Americans with roots in the Asian continent and the Pacific Islands. For middle schoolers, recognizing this month is vital for building a more complete understanding of the American story. By exploring the achievements of AAPI leaders in science, art, and civil rights, we help our students see that our country’s progress has always been fueled by a vibrant tapestry of voices. This celebration fosters a sense of belonging for our AAPI students and cultivates a spirit of respect and curiosity across our entire school community.
At home, you can celebrate by exploring AAPI cultures through activities that resonate with middle school interests. Consider watching a documentary on the "Father of the iPod," Tony Fadell, or reading a celebrated graphic novel like American Born Chinese to spark discussions about identity. You can also turn dinner into a learning experience by trying a new cuisine together—whether it's Vietnamese pho, Samoan panipopo, or Korean bibimbap—and researching the cultural significance behind the dish. These small, intentional moments help your child develop a global perspective and an appreciation for the many traditions that enrich our modern world.
Â
Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a vital time to reduce the stigma around emotional well-being and prioritize the "inner lives" of our students. Middle school is a period of rapid brain development and social change, making it a critical window for children to learn how to manage stress and navigate complex emotions.
By recognizing this month at school, we send a powerful message: mental health is just as important as physical health. Our goal is to foster an environment where asking for help is seen as a strength and where every student feels equipped with the tools to build lifelong resilience.
At home, you can support your middle schooler by normalizing open conversations about feelings and stress. Instead of the standard "How was your day?", try asking, "What was a moment today where you felt really confident, or a moment where you felt overwhelmed?" You can also model healthy coping strategies as a family, such as taking "tech-free" walks to decompress, practicing deep breathing before a big test, or simply ensuring consistent sleep routines. By making mental wellness a daily family priority, you help your child develop the self-awareness and emotional intelligence they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
If you or your student would like counseling, please contact the school for referrals to our Mental Health Partners: Care Solace & DayBreak.
