Principal’s Message: Diagnostic, Safety, & Trips!

Dear Families,

With only three weeks left in the school year, we are wrapping up our iReady Diagnostic in Reading and Math this week, and we are so proud of the growth our Hawks have shown. As we enter this final stretch, we encourage our students to stay focused and finish their classes on a strong academic note.

Safety also remains a top priority; on Wednesday, we will conduct a "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" drill to ensure our campus is prepared and our students feel confident in our safety protocols.

The excitement is especially high for our 8th graders as they begin their final celebrations! We have two 8th-grade field trips scheduled for this week, offering our promoting students a wonderful chance to bond and make lasting memories before they move on to high school.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students energized and engaged as we head toward a fantastic finish to the year.

Warmly,
Mrs. Antuna, Principal
Ms. Coronel, Assistant Principal

Hawk of the Week

Stellar Staff Member

Starnes

Kelly Starnes

We are proud to announce Kelly Starnes as our Hawk of the Week! Nominated by her peers for her incredible "hyperawareness" of the needs of those around her, Ms. Starnes is a master at anticipating how to best support both her students and her colleagues. As our 7th-grade Social Studies teacher, she creates a classroom environment where history isn't just a subject in a textbook—it is a living, breathing conversation. By incorporating CNN 10 into her daily routine, she empowers her students to connect past events with current world news, fostering a space where they can safely share their thoughts, reflections, and reactions to the world around them.

Ms. Starnes is deeply in tune with the "whole child," often recognizing when her students need a change of pace to stay focused and healthy. She frequently utilizes our outdoor campus space for class time, providing her Hawks with the mental breaks and fresh air they need to stay engaged and regulated. This empathetic approach to instruction ensures that her classroom is not only a place of high-level learning but also a sanctuary for student well-being. Her ability to pivot based on the energy of her students is a testament to her skill as an educator.

Beyond her classroom walls, Ms. Starnes has stepped into a vital leadership role this year as our Social Studies Department Lead. In this capacity, she has worked closely with the administration and fellow leads to shape instructional decisions that benefit our entire school. She is the ultimate team player—kind, empathetic, and always the first to offer a helping hand or a supportive word to a fellow teacher. Whether she is leading a department meeting or bringing history to life for her 7th graders, Ms. Starnes makes Gavilan View a better place. Thank you, Ms. Starnes, for your dedication and your heart!

Attendance Matters!

attendance

Help us to get to 100% attendance!

We need your help families!

Attendance is important! We’ve been working really hard to minimize tardies both in the morning and students showing up to their classes late.

  • Please talk to your children about the importance of going to school every day and showing up on time for every class!
  • This week's average was 94.58% which stayed low just like last week
  • If your child is absent, please make sure to call us and tell us the reason.
  • We had 81 students late in the morning at least one day this past week, 54 students with period tardies.

Students with repetitive tardies will be assigned an Attendance Accountability Project.

May is...

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month & Mental Health Awareness Month

AAPI

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich history, diverse cultures, and incredible contributions of Americans with roots in the Asian continent and the Pacific Islands. For middle schoolers, recognizing this month is vital for building a more complete understanding of the American story. By exploring the achievements of AAPI leaders in science, art, and civil rights, we help our students see that our country’s progress has always been fueled by a vibrant tapestry of voices. This celebration fosters a sense of belonging for our AAPI students and cultivates a spirit of respect and curiosity across our entire school community.

At home, you can celebrate by exploring AAPI cultures through activities that resonate with middle school interests. Consider watching a documentary on the "Father of the iPod," Tony Fadell, or reading a celebrated graphic novel like American Born Chinese to spark discussions about identity. You can also turn dinner into a learning experience by trying a new cuisine together—whether it's Vietnamese pho, Samoan panipopo, or Korean bibimbap—and researching the cultural significance behind the dish. These small, intentional moments help your child develop a global perspective and an appreciation for the many traditions that enrich our modern world.

MHAM

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a vital time to reduce the stigma around emotional well-being and prioritize the "inner lives" of our students. Middle school is a period of rapid brain development and social change, making it a critical window for children to learn how to manage stress and navigate complex emotions.

By recognizing this month at school, we send a powerful message: mental health is just as important as physical health. Our goal is to foster an environment where asking for help is seen as a strength and where every student feels equipped with the tools to build lifelong resilience.

At home, you can support your middle schooler by normalizing open conversations about feelings and stress. Instead of the standard "How was your day?", try asking, "What was a moment today where you felt really confident, or a moment where you felt overwhelmed?" You can also model healthy coping strategies as a family, such as taking "tech-free" walks to decompress, practicing deep breathing before a big test, or simply ensuring consistent sleep routines. By making mental wellness a daily family priority, you help your child develop the self-awareness and emotional intelligence they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

If you or your student would like counseling, please contact the school for referrals to our Mental Health Partners: Care Solace & DayBreak.
