Dear Gavilan View Community,
|
Dear Families,
We have officially arrived at our last full week of the school year—complete with our final Monday and final Friday! This week, we are thrilled to celebrate Classified Staff Appreciation Week. Our front office, custodians, paraeducators, and support staff are the backbone of Gavilan View, and we are so grateful for everything they do for our school. To keep our campus energy high and full of joy, we are also running a fun-filled Spirit Week! Academically, our teachers are busy finalizing 4th Quarter grades, and we will begin our campus-wide Chromebook collection this week, so please help us by ensuring your student brings their device and charger to school.
The campus will be buzzing with excitement and inspiration as we host our College & Career Fair on Thursday and welcome back former Hawks for the high school Grad Walk on Friday. It is also a monumental week for our oldest students as their milestone celebrations officially begin! We will honor their achievements at the 8th-Grade Awards Night on Wednesday evening and dance the night away at the Promotion Dance on Friday.
Thank you for your incredible partnership throughout this year—let’s finish this final full week with immense Hawk pride!
Warmly,
Mrs. Antuna, Principal
Ms. Coronel, Assistant Principal

School Updates & Reminders

This week we celebrate staff in our front office, custodians, campus supervisors,
cafeteria, library, and all our paraprofessionals. Our school simply could not run without their
hard work, dedication, and heart, so please take a moment to show them some extra love.Â
We encourage families and students to show your appreciation.
It doesn’t have to be anything big – just a little thank you or handwritten card – goes a long way!
|
We encourage all students to dress up each day and help their first period class win
the first period class competition for Hawk pride!
|
It is important that students stay on top of their assignments and homework so that they finish the school year on a strong note. If they need any help, please encourage them to attend Homework Center either at lunch or Wednesdays after school.

We are absolutely thrilled to honor Emilie Fiala as our Hawk of the Week! Nominated by her peers for her exceptional dedication and the high-leverage instruction happening in her classroom, Ms. Fiala is an absolute powerhouse on our campus. As our 7th and 8th-grade Science teacher, she has a gift for turning standard curriculum into an interactive adventure. On any given day, you can walk into her room and find our Hawks completely immersed in hands-on labs, educational games, and collaborative activities. By making science tangible and exciting, she creates an environment where students don't just learn science—they actively want to participate in it.
What truly sets Ms. Fiala apart is her remarkable ability to connect with middle school students during a pivotal time in their lives. She goes out of her way to ensure every child feels safe, seen, and comfortable in her room. With her warm and grounded approach, she skillfully navigates what could easily be awkward or complex scientific conversations and turns them into normal, confident dialogues. Her students know without a doubt that she cares about their personal growth just as much as their academic success, making her classroom a true sanctuary for learning.
Ms. Fiala’s "above and beyond" work ethic is visible in everything she does. She is a master of the home-school partnership, maintaining frequent communication with families so parents are always empowered to support their child’s success. Whether she is sacrificing her lunch break to offer extra help, staying late to perfect a lab setup, or showing up at after-school sports games to loudly root on our athletes, her dedication is unmatched. Add in the fact that she is always fully dressed up for every single school Spirit Week, and it is easy to see how much joy she brings to our campus. Thank you, Ms. Fiala, for your tireless work and your massive heart for our Hawks!

Attendance is important! We’ve been working really hard to minimize tardies both in the morning and students showing up to their classes late.Â
- Please talk to your children about the importance of going to school every day and showing up on time for every class!
- This week's average was 93.88% which dropped significantly from last week.
- If your child is absent, please make sure to call us and tell us the reason.
- We had 107 students late in the morning at least one day this past week, 54 students with period tardies.
Students with repetitive tardies will be assigned an Attendance Accountability Project.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich history, diverse cultures, and incredible contributions of Americans with roots in the Asian continent and the Pacific Islands. For middle schoolers, recognizing this month is vital for building a more complete understanding of the American story. By exploring the achievements of AAPI leaders in science, art, and civil rights, we help our students see that our country’s progress has always been fueled by a vibrant tapestry of voices. This celebration fosters a sense of belonging for our AAPI students and cultivates a spirit of respect and curiosity across our entire school community.
At home, you can celebrate by exploring AAPI cultures through activities that resonate with middle school interests. Consider watching a documentary on the "Father of the iPod," Tony Fadell, or reading a celebrated graphic novel like American Born Chinese to spark discussions about identity. You can also turn dinner into a learning experience by trying a new cuisine together—whether it's Vietnamese pho, Samoan panipopo, or Korean bibimbap—and researching the cultural significance behind the dish. These small, intentional moments help your child develop a global perspective and an appreciation for the many traditions that enrich our modern world.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a vital time to reduce the stigma around emotional well-being and prioritize the "inner lives" of our students. Middle school is a period of rapid brain development and social change, making it a critical window for children to learn how to manage stress and navigate complex emotions.
By recognizing this month at school, we send a powerful message: mental health is just as important as physical health. Our goal is to foster an environment where asking for help is seen as a strength and where every student feels equipped with the tools to build lifelong resilience.
At home, you can support your middle schooler by normalizing open conversations about feelings and stress. Instead of the standard "How was your day?", try asking, "What was a moment today where you felt really confident, or a moment where you felt overwhelmed?" You can also model healthy coping strategies as a family, such as taking "tech-free" walks to decompress, practicing deep breathing before a big test, or simply ensuring consistent sleep routines. By making mental wellness a daily family priority, you help your child develop the self-awareness and emotional intelligence they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
If you or your student would like counseling, please contact the school for referrals to our Mental Health Partners: Care Solace & DayBreak.
