We are thrilled to celebrate our 8th-grade English teacher, Austin Muñiz, as our Hawk of the Week! Mr. Muñiz was nominated by his peers for his outstanding dedication to our students both in the classroom and on the athletic strip. When our Fencing team needed a co-coach this season, Mr. Muñiz stepped right up despite having no prior background in the sport. Alongside co-coach Mr. Holzwart, he embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, learning alongside our student-athletes and modeling a true growth mindset and stellar sportsmanship. Their encouragement sparked tremendous growth across the squad, culminating in a thrilling victory at this past Saturday's final tournament, where a Gavilan View Hawk took home 1st place!
Inside the classroom, Mr. Muñiz is shaping our 8th graders into confident, analytical writers. Through thought-provoking novels and complex texts, he guides students to craft strong arguments, analyze literature deeply, and back up their claims with solid textual evidence. His students know him as an empathetic, dependable champion who supports them not just academically, but in anything they need to thrive. He creates a safe, rigorous learning environment where students feel heard, valued, and motivated to push their thinking.
Beyond his direct work with students, Mr. Muñiz embodies Gavilan View’s core belief that everyone—staff included—never stops learning. During our recent campus Learning Walks, where teachers visited peer classrooms to observe and exchange best practices, Mr. Muñiz was an absolute superstar. He hosted the most visiting colleagues of anyone on campus, graciously opening his doors to share his instructional craft, and still found the time to visit his peers’ rooms to learn from them in return. Thank you, Mr. Muñiz, for your collaborative spirit, your coaching heart, and your relentless commitment to our Hawks!
